NEW DELHI, MARCH 12. Amardeep Singh Rai and Saravdeep Mann were set for a showdown on
Wednesday as they led jointly after 75 shots, in the National skeet
championship at Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Ranges here on Tuesday.
Rai, the silver medallist in the 2001 Bikaner Nationals, kept his cool
and performed brilliantly in the windy conditions, shooting 24, 23, 24 for a
total of 71. Rai, who last year missed the gold by just one point to H.S.
Sandhu, maintained a lead of seven points over the defending champion, going
into the final day.
Despite the good scores, the Chhattisgarh-based shooter will find Mann a
difficult opponent. A pilot with the Alliance Air, Mann lost two birds in his
first round, but then he shot impeccably.
Closely following the leaders was P.S. Sodhi of Delhi. Sodhi, who
entered the fray only this morning, shot a series of 24, 22, 24 for a total of
70.
Apart from Rai, those who figure in the team for the upcoming World Cups
in Sydney and Shanghai, just about managed to stay in contention. Veteran
Harinder Singh Bedi and Navin Jindal both shot 65 each. Rahul Rai, the fourth
skeet marksman in the team, is not taking part in the Nationals. In the junior
men's category, Indian Airlines' Alok Singh led the field of four shooters with
the score of 49. Delhi's Devesh Rai shot 46, while Uttar Pradesh's A.D. Peoples
was third at 42.
Arti Singh, the lone woman competitor, won the skeet title with a
three-round aggregate of 66. Arti shot well in the first two rounds, posting
identical scores of 23. As the day wore on Arti struggled with the low house
targets. She managed 20 out of 25 but bettered her performance in the previous
Nationals by two points. Arti had shot 64 in Bikaner setting a new National
Record.
Later, she improved that score, shooting 70 out of 75, in the Lonato
World Cup.
